Liver transplant in India- no regrets! Rakesh, at 33 years of age was told that a liver transplant alone could save his life. His family was shattered by the news. Worse they were told that this procedure can only be done in a foreign country. He later recounts how fortunate he was to have guidance from his family doctor, who suggested that this now possible in India and that it was being carried out by the author at his center, in Delhi. Meanwhile his condition had worsened further, his bilurubin had increased to 23 mg/dl, had lost 10 Kgs of weight and also suffered from bleeding disorder. He required 6 units of fresh plasma everyday to prevent him from bleeding. He was evaluated for a liver transplant and was placed on an aggressive pre-transplant treatment regimen. He is now a changed man. He underwent a live related liver transplant at the author's center, 3 months ago and had a speedy recovery with an uneventful hospital stay less than 4 weeks. The operation itself lasted 18 hours, wherein the right lobe of liver from his brother was removed and successfully transplanted into him, after removing his own diseased liver. He was taken off the ventilator in less than 48 hours and was given aggressive nutrition and physiotherapy. He was kept in the state of the art liver transplant ICU with dedicated staff for 2 weeks before being transferred to a high dependency unit. The post operative management was intensive with half a dozen health care staff working on him round the clock. His liver functions were monitored twice a day and so were his medications. He was ambulating normally and eating normal diet within one week. At three months, he had no rejection, fever or any other infection. He has gained 10 Kgs in weight and leading an excellent quality of life.
- Med - Bytes -
- Thousands of patients in India suffer from liver failure in the productive years of life.
- Once advanced liver failure sets in, liver transplant becomes the only treatment option.
- Postponing the inevitable only makes the transplant more complicated and diminish the chance of success.
- Since cadaver organ availability is low in Asian countries, live related transplant holds the only future hope for patients with liver failure.
