Dr.Rajasekar graduated from university of Madras with MBBS and Master of Surgery Degree. He was the best out going student in his batch of MS students from the University of Madras that year for which he recieved the Dr.U.Mohan Rao prize. He obtained his FRCS degree from the Royal College of Surgeons, Edinburgh. He recieved advanced training in GI surgery, Laparoscopic surgery, Vascular Surgery and Organ Transplantation in the UK in subsequent ten years. He trained from reputed hospitals in the UK- St. James’s University hospital, Leeds, Royal Victoria Infirmary, Newcastle Upon Tyne and the Guy’s Hospital-London.
He then pursued advanced training in liver surgery and abdominal organ transplantation at the University of Chicago Hospitals, Chicago, USA where he was conferred fellowship in the field with certificate of accredited training by the American Society of Transplant Surgeons.
During his Tenure in the UK he has held academic positions as a lecturer in the surgery in University of Leeds and Newcastle. He has also carried out advanced basic science research in the field of Transplantation Immunology and was conferred an MD degree by the academic council at University of Newcastle. He then pursued advanced accredited training in Hepatobilary surgery and abdominal organ transplantation at the University of Chicago Hospitals, Chicago,USA where he was conferred a fellowship certification in this field.
He carried out over 100 liver transplants, several kidney transplants and kidney-pancreas transplants at this premier transplant center. His training was comprehensive to include pre and post-liver transplant therapy , intensive care management and post transplant follow up. He returned to India in August 1996 to establish the country's first Hepatobiliary Surgery and Multiorgan Transplant unit at the Indraprastha Apollo Hospital, New Delhi.
He has been working for the last ten years as a Senior Consultant Surgeon, heading this department. His expertise includes complex hepato-pancreatico-biliary surgery, kidney transplantation, Liver transplantation in children and adults, living related liver transplantation in adults and children, pancreas transplantation and laparoscoipic surgery.
Dr. Rajasekar has changed his position as a fulltime consultant transplant surgeon to that of part time consultant at the Apollo hospital, New Delhi. Dr Rajasekar is now dedicated to the cause of making liver transplantation affordable and available to the common people. He desires to bring it within the reach of Indian citizens in the lower socio-economic strata as well. He has associated in addition with the leading hospital at Hyderabad- the Global Hospitals to be able to serve the patients from the south of India. He is also developing more centers in South India, in order to reach all sections of the society. He will be conducting liver clinics at various cities such as Chennai, Ludhiana, Mumbai and Guwahati at periodic intervals.
He has pioneered, cadaveric and living donor liver transplantation in both adults and children in India. He has pioneered adult to adult living donor right lobe liver transplantation in South Asia. He has also pioneered Transperitoneal laparoscopic donor nephrectomy and has the largest series of such surgeries (>100) to his credit.
He has several scientific publications in international journals to his credit and has chaired several national level professional meetings and presented papers in national and international transplantation conferences. He is a member of a large number of national and international associations of surgeons and transplant specialists.
Professional accomplishments in India:
- Established the nation’s first Liver transplant programme at Delhi- 1996.
- Carried out the country’s first successful pediatric living donor liver transplant and adult cadaver liver transplant in 1998.
- Carried out the first inter city transfer of a cadaver liver from Chennai to Delhi.
- Carried out the first adult to adult living donor right lobe liver transplant in whole of South Asia (Major. Jha, currently serving in the armed forces).
- Carried out the first living donor and cadaver liver transplant for acute liver failure.
- Carried out the first combined liver and kidney transplant in one patient.
- Carried out the first successful liver transplant in a child from Pakistan.
